Losing Weight the Healthy Way By Akanett Web Publishing
Almost 108 million Americans were overweight or obese in 1999. Until now, obesity continues to be a serious problem and is predicted to reach epidemic levels by the year 2020.
One way to prevent this scenario is to make people aware of the risks of being overweight or obese.
Here are some diseases that you are putting yourself in risk of if you are carrying a lot of extra pounds:
1. heart disease
2. stroke
3. diabetes
4. cancer
5. arthritis
6. hypertension
Losing weight helps to prevent and control these diseases.
The quick methods which have spread like fire these days do not provide lasting results. More often than not, dieting methods which involve dietary drinks, foods and supplement or pills do not work. If they do, the results are just temporary.
It is better to rely on a healthy option which will provide lifetime results. You have to set realistic goals and not expect to lose a lot of pounds in a short span of time.
Here are some tips on how you can lose those unwanted pounds the healthy way:
1. Do not starve your self.
The key to a healthier way of losing weight is: Do not diet.
You may seem happy and feel that you are losing those unwanted flabs on your belly and thighs by skipping meals. But remember that this would not last long. Your body cannot tolerate having insufficient food to fuel the energy that you use up everyday.
If you get used to skipping one or two meals a day, your stored calories will be used up instead of the energy that should have been provided by your meals. So if you just eat one huge sandwich in one day, it will end up straight to your problem area (i.e. highs, buttocks, hips).
2. Start your day right.
Mothers always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Have a healthy meal in the morning to jump-start your metabolism.
Your food intake after you wake up will be used to burn fat all day long.
3. Eat small, healthy meals frequently.
Five small-serving snacks per day is better than three hearty meals. Eating more frequently, and in small servings, can prevent over-eating. This will also increase your metabolism and make calories burn faster.
4. Decide on how much weight you want to lose.
Keep your goals realistic. In the long run, it is virtually impossible for you to lose 40 pounds in 2 weeks. Have a mindset that you want to eat healthy to stay healthy for the rest of your life.
Once you have decided on a plan or program, stick to it and make sure that you follow your own set of dieting rules.
5. Drink lots of water.
Your body needs sufficient water to burn fat and keep your cells hydrated and healthy.
6. Avoid too much sugar.
Plan your meals around lots of fruits and vegetables, some bread, rice or pasta for that carbo fix that you need, plus lean meat and protein rich-foods. Sweets, sodas and pastries should be once-in-a-while indulgences only.
7. Watch your fat intake.
Fat is not the culprit to being overweight. You need this to keep your weight at the proper level.
There is such a thing as healthy fats. Olive, peanuts and canola oil have them. Tuna, salmon and mackerel have omega-3 fats which is good for the heart.
8. Exercise.
Leave your car if you are only going a few blocks from home, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jog, cycle or skate. Use these activites and other home chores if you are too lazy to go to the gym and take exercise classes. Make sure that you do this regularly and you will not even notice that you are already shedding pounds with these mundane activities.
It does not matter how much weight you plan or need to lose. What is important is that you set realistic goals for yourself.
Go slow. If you have already lost 5 or 6 pounds, give yourself a break then try to lose the next 5 pounds.
Eat healthy, drink lots of water, have enough sleep and exercise. This will give you a higher chance of losing weight and improving your health, which would result to a new, healthier you.

New Happenings this Week Insomnia is one of the most common health complaints, afflicting people of all ages and backgrounds. Difficulty in falling or staying asleep can hinder all aspects of an individual's life. If you suffer from insomnia, whether often or occasionally, Yoga can help. Keeping this in mind, this week we focus on Yoga for Managing Insomnia. Hot Fitness Tip of the Week Not sleeping enough seems to be associated with metabolic changes that can lead to overeating and obesity. Sleeping too little can also contribute to weight gain by putting undue stress on the body. The body sees sleep deprivation as a state of stress; cortisol is the stress hormone. Cortisol causes, in turn, the release of insulin and insulin is a storage hormone that promotes fat storage. On the other hand, people who exercise spend more time in deep sleep rather than in light sleep; this has been measured. Sleep is a sign of a balanced lifestyle, including exercise and diet. And it's important to sleep a sufficient amount as a part of a balanced lifestyle that would promote good health. Words of Inspiration Be master of Your destiny: When Jim Valvano was 17 years old he took out a simple white index card and wrote down all of his professional aspirations. He would play basketball in high school and college, become an assistant basketball coach, then a head coach, achieve a victory in Madison Square Garden, and finally cut down the nets after winning a National Championship. Jim's ability to see his place in the world with such clarity was truly a gift. This simple card, coupled with a strong belief that he could control his fate, would guide the next ten years of his life. At the age of 36, Jim could take out his tattered index card and cross out every single dream. He was indeed the master of his destiny. Along the way, he adopted a personal philosophy for living that enabled an ordinary man to accomplish the extraordinary. Jim believed that enthusiasm for life, dreaming big, and working hard were the elements that allowed him to be successful. There is no doubt that Jim's tenacity, passion, and vision played key roles in his rise to the top. However, listen to any individual recount a personal memory of Jim and nothing from the above list of accomplishments would be mentioned. Instead, you would hear of the qualities that made Jim Valvano unforgettable. Suceess Quote It is the paradox of life that the way to miss pleasure is to seek it first. The very first condition of lasting happiness is that a life should be full of purpose, aiming at something outside self. -Hugo Black Healthy Recipe CARAMEL FUDGE CAKE: Serves: 4, Ingredients: 9 ounces Chocolate cake mix, 7 ounces Caramel, 1/4 cup Margarine, 7 fluid ounces Milk condensed, sweetened, 1/2 cup Pecans, Direction: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Yoga for Managing Insomnia Yoga for Managing Insomnia: Insomnia is a huge problem in this fast-paced, sugar and caffeine addicted country. But if we can first identify the habits we have that contribute to our sleeplessness and slowly change them, and at the same time add more relaxation and deep breathing to our pre-sleep routine, we will sleep better. Insomnia is one of the most common health complaints, afflicting people of all ages and backgrounds. Difficulty in falling or staying asleep can hinder all aspects of an individual's life. People with sleep problems often experience irritability, tension, helplessness, and depression as well. Unchecked, insomnia can become a debilitating and self-perpetuating cycle. While there are many causes of sleeplessness, anxiety, over work or personal problems is often a strong factor. If you suffer from insomnia, whether often or occasionally, Yoga can help. Through relaxing physical exercise, breathing techniques and complete relaxation, you can promote more regular and restful sleeping patterns without resorting to sleep-inducing drugs. Such drugs interfere with your body's natural sleep cycle and can create psychological dependence and undesirable side effects. Before going to bed, you can do a few gentle stretches to relieve tension and help you relax. Happy baby (Ananda Balasana) is a good choice because it releases the lower back and hips, leaving you feeling looser and more relaxed. Goddess pose (Supta Baddha Konasana), which opens the groins, is another option. You can do both these poses while lying in bed.

Water Is The
Most Important Nutrient
Water makes up about 60-70% of your body weight. Water helps to control
the temprature of the body and serves a vehicles for moving nutrients
to the different parts of the body. Fluid imbalance can lead to several
problems in the body including weight gain.
Water Tips
Drink plenty of water.
You body needs a lot of water. Water is not just way to flush out toxin
but if you have more water in your body you will generally feel
healthier and fitter. This will discourage any tendency to gorge. The
best thing about water is that is has no calories at all.
Start your day with a
glass of water. Drink a glass of cool water first
thing in the morning. It is a wonderful way to start your day and you
only need a lesser quantity of your breakfast after that.
Drink a glass of water before you start the meal. Water naturally needs
some space so that you feel fuller without actually having to stuff
yourself.
Have another glass of water while you are having the meal. Again this
is another way of making yourself full so that you can
actually rise from the table eating less but feeling full just the
same. Instead of drinking it one gulp, take sips after each morsel. It
will help the food to settle faster so that you get that feeling that
you are full faster.
Water also plays an
important part in weight control.
